David Preli is an animator and illustrator in Brooklyn with a degree in Film, Animation, and Video from RISD. In 2024 he won a Cannes Golden Lion as Animator and Editor at GALE in New York, where his most recent work has been as a creative technologist and motion artist. He takes from 19th-century naïve artists and Paleolithic cave painting, and builds bizarre characters and peculiar scenes out of simple color and geometric abstraction. He writes his own tools too: generative work in p5.js, scripts in Python that handle the repetitive parts of the work, and Cadence, a React app that turns motion design into a system an engineer can build. Before any of that he was a research scientist, in pharmaceutical research, fuel cells, and materials science.
